Sim Bruce Richards was a residential architect, active in San Diego during the 1940s - 1970s. His use of natural materials in his designs was the inspiration for the exhibit title, as his environments were created to awake the senses through touch, sight, and smell.
The exhibit graphics were also inspired by patterns and designs created by Richards for use as decorative elements in his spaces. The color palette emulates the warmth his design creates with his use of woods and adobe, and his signature roof line was used in the exhibit logo.
